Jonah is officially one year old! (One year and 3 days, to be exact.) And now for every cliche in the book: Where did the time go? I can't believe it's been a year already! It went by so fast! Our baby is not such a baby anymore! Ok, I'm done. But seriously, those things are all true. Now for a time of reflecting...
Even during pregnancy, I thought Jonah was going to be a laid-back, chill-ax kind of baby. He didn't "kick" or go crazy in my belly all the time... more like little nudges and timid movements. This has carried over to today. Sure, he has spurts where he is excited and crawling his little tushy off, but he is SUCH an easy baby. My mom has even said that she doesn't think I've had a taste of what a "real" baby is like. And of course, I'm always comforted when people inevitably tell me, "You know the next one isn't going to be like that, right?" YES. I KNOW. I WILL NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO.
He even made his appearance into the world easily. It was like he was setting me up for the rest of the time. We were in the hospital at 7:00 a.m. and he was born by 11:30 a.m. Our experience was wonderful and I would do it again and again. I feel like God (and Jonah) was very gracious to me that day!
The first 2 months were the hardest. I don't wish to experience them again. I think they are hard for everyone. Jonah had colic and I was at my wits end trying to make him happy. Nursing was more difficult than I had ever imagined. I was adjusting to my world being turned upside down and Jonah was adjusting to being in the world. I wanted to hit the fast forward button.
We hit our stride in months 3-5. We got our routine down pat, and I felt like I could breathe easier. Since then, it's been mostly smooth sailing. Jonah is happy (seriously, the kid RARELY cries) and healthy. His personality has really started shining in the past 6 months. He is extremely focused, easy-going, and cautious. He loves Mommy and Daddy, and his grin is the biggest when the 3 of us are together (that's when mine is the biggest too)! I don't know how I got so blessed that God would give him to us.
Height: 31" (80th percentile)
Weight: 23 lbs. 7 oz. (50th percentile)
Head Circumference: 90th percentile (I can't remember the measurement but I really don't think his head looks that big! Apparently it is though!)
Clothes: He's in 12-18 month clothes and size 4 diapers.
Eating: He's eating about 75% table food and 25% baby food. Favorites are bananas, apples, and scrambled eggs. He LOVES his food- it's the only thing he's aggressive about! The only things he hasn't liked lately are red meat (roast and ground beef have been tried) and broccoli. He attacks every sippy cup and bottle that's given to him. He drinks whole milk, water, and a little bit of apple juice (for digestive issues).
Nursing: At the beginning of December, I started slowly cutting down on my nursing. We went from 4 feedings to 3, and then 2 the next week, and so on. I stopped altogether the day after his birthday. I am so proud of myself for making it 12 months- woohoo!!! I've feel a little insulted because Jonah did not even seem to notice (after I worked so hard!). But that's okay, I'm thankful that he's fine taking regular milk. Weaning gradually was so easy and I didn't have even an ounce of pain.
Sleeping: Jonah sleeps from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. every night and takes a 2 hour nap in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. He sleeps mostly on his stomach, and prefers one particular corner of the crib. :)
Playing: Now that he's mobile, he is not too keen on anything that keeps him contained (exersaucer, jumperoo, etc.). He loves his new activity table (Bright Starts Having a Ball Get Rolling Activity Table), reading books (especially ones with flaps to pull up), his new Fisher Price car ramp, and this little plastic rain stick thing that we got at a thrift store. We take lots of walks- he loves being outside. On especially nice days, we sit outside on a blanket in the yard and play (a.k.a. try to eat grass and leaves) and watch cars drive by. He is also a great shopper- so much to see and riding in the cart is fun!
Jonah is a very fast crawler and he pulls to stand all the time, even if there's just a wall to lean on to support himself. He will let go to stand by himself, but when he realizes he's not holding on, he gets panicked and grabs onto something really quick. He "cruises" around the furniture with no assistance, and can walk just holding onto our fingers. I don't think it will be too long before he walks on his own!
He is starting to babble a lot more. He FINALLY said "Mama!" I should say that he finally screamed "Mama" because he only says it under times of definite distress (i.e. crying hysterically). I will be thankful to hear it in a more positive scenario soon- ha ha! "Dada" is constant, and he says "dog" when one of our dogs walks by. We're starting to work on animal sounds too!
We're having a birthday party for his on Saturday at the house (his 2nd one because his first was in Kentucky)! Now to see the changes a year can make:
